CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Cubs signed veteran catcher Toms Nido and designated Yan Gomes for a signment on Wednesday. The 30-year-old Nido was released by the New York Mets on Monday after being designated for a signment last week. He was hitting .229 with three home runs and eight RBIs. Nido was drafted by New York in 2012 and was the second longest-tenured player on the team behind Brandon Nimmo. The 30-year-old catcher, who remained with the organization after being Robert Congel Jersey designated for a signment last June, thanked the Mets with a heart emoji on the social media platform X. Gomes, a 13-year veteran, is batting a career-low .154 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 34 games this season. Miguel Amaya has been getting most of the starts at catcher. The 36-year-old Gomes spent 2 1/2 seasons in Chicago, batting .241 with 20 homers and 101 RBIs in 236 games. He was an All-Star with Cleveland in 2018 and played on a World Series champion with Washington in 2019. The Cubs also placed right-hander Keegan Thompson on the paternity list and recalled righty Porter Hodge. Thompson is 1-1 with one save and a 4.30 ERA in 11 games. Devon Williams Jersey

The Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with first baseman/outfielder by agreeing to a one-year, $1.5MM deal, Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Hed been projected for a $1.6MM salary . Smith, 29 next month, was selected with the No. 7 pick by Arizona back in 2017. Hes not lived up to that lofty billing but did enjoy a breakout showing in the Trevor Daley Jersey big leagues this past season, mashing at a .270/.348/.547 clip. That stout production came in a fairly small sample of 158 trips to the plate, but it was supported by career-best batted ball metrics; Smith averaged a hearty 90.2 mph off the bat and put 44% off his batted balls in play at 95 mph or more. Smith also drew a free pa s in an excellent 11.4% of his plate appearances and fanned in a lower-than-average 19.4% of his trips to the plate. As with his quality of contact, that plate discipline holds up with a look under the hood. Only seven percent of hitters in baseball (min. 150 plate appearances) chased pitches off the plate at a lower rate than Smith last season (20.1%). Only 14% of players in that same set made contact at a better rate than Smiths 90.5% when swinging at pitches within the strike zone. Put more simply, Smith showed keen knowledge of the strike zone and very, very rarely mi sed when attacking a ball over the plate. That type of discipline and bat-to-ball prowe s is hard to fluke your way into over even a sample as limited as his 2024 showing. This marks Smiths first offseason of arbitration eligibility and his first time earning noticeably north of the league minimum. Hes out of minor league options, so Smith is a veritable lock to make the Opening Day roster, barring injury. Smith wont be entrusted with regular time at first base even after the Snakes lost to free agency, as Arizona quickly pivoted and acquired to man the position. However, he should log ample time at designated hitter now that has also left the club , and hed presumably be the primary alternative at first base should Naylor incur an injury or simply require a breather. Smith can also rotate into either left or right field in the event of an injury or day off for , and/or . Smith is a career .226/.289/.310 hitter against lefties and thus isnt likely to see much action against southpaws, but hes a .249/.333/.427 hitter against righties including a huge .282/.356/.564 showing this past season. Hes controllable through the 2027 season. Scott Wilson Jersey

The Braves are trade interest in , and given the teams penchant for signing players to long-term extensions, locking up a Georgia native like Cease would seem like a logical next step if a deal can be worked out to obtain the righty from the White Sox . However, points out a po sible obstacle Cease is represented by Scott Boras, who traditionally Tim Thomas Jersey advises his clients to test free agency rather than sign long-term extensions. Enough high-profile Boras clients have signed extensions that this isnt at all a hard-and-fast rule, since as Rosenthal notes, Boras will ultimately operate according to his clients demands. But it is perhaps noteworthy for this particular scenario, since Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos rarely acquires Boras Corporations clients, even though both Anthopoulos and Boras any lack of communication or lack of connection between the two sides. Trading for and extending Cease would be a way of putting this narrative to bed, though it remains to be seen if Atlanta will instead opt for another frontline pitcher besides Cease as the Braves continue to look for rotation help. More from the National League Not much has changed in the Lerner familys attempts to sell the Nationals , as the search is now approaching two full years since news first broke of the Lerners explorations about a sale. provides something of an update on the situation, though Ted Leonsis remains the top suitor but still seems unwilling to meet the Lerners desired price of around $2.4 billion. Leonsis last offer topped the $2 billion mark, but the Lerners dont appear in any hurry to make a sale unle s Leonsis or another bidder ups the ante. The seemingly neverending dispute with the Orioles about MASN broadcasting revenues also still remains a sticking point in any ownership discu sions. In terms of how this translates to the on-field product, Janes notes that the Nationals low payroll has more to do with the teams rebuild strategy than it does a concerted effort to cut costs in advance of a potential sale. The Diamondbacks had some interest in before the utilityman with the Royals earlier this week, reports. The versatile Hampton wouldve been a backup at several positions off the bench, and in particularly been a right-handed hitting complement to or at center field or shortstop, respectively. Right-handed hitting is a priority for the DBacks in general, and Piecoro suggests that might be a candidate for a return to Arizona, based off GM Mike Hazens recent comments about how the Diamondbacks could be open to a DH-centric player who swings from the right side. Arizona has already landed one notable right-handed bat this offseason in from the Mariners. Sticking with the National League champs, the Diamondbacks named Shaun Larkin as their new director of player development earlier this week. Larkin has spent the last three seasons as the Dodgers field coordinator as part of an eight-year tenure in L.A., and he previously had a long history as a minor league player, coach, and manager in Clevelands farm system. Larkins hiring is the latest move in a DBacks offseason that has seen quite a bit of turnover in the front office and coaching ranks, though as Hazen , we 100 percent expected it. This is what happens when you have a succe sful season.Bringing some outside perspectives into the organization in terms of whats going on in scouting and player development around the game, I think is important . Guardians first baseman drew trade interest from the Cubs, Mariners, and Pirates during the Winter Meetings, reports. There is no indication that the Guards were in serious talks about a deal, and as Hoynes notes, for an offensively challenged club, it seems strange that theyd consider trading [Naylor]. Butit never hurts to listen. The 26-year-old Naylor hit .308/.354/.489 with 17 homers over 495 plate appearances last season, marking his second straight year of quality production. The first baseman has a 124 wRC+ in 993 PA since Opening Day 2022, and this past season saw Naylor develop into more of a well-rounded hitter than just a power bat. Naylors average and OBP increased greatly from 2022, and Naylor also cut back on his strikeouts without losing any of his power. While he doesnt walk much, that approach isnt unusual for a Cleveland team that prioritizes contact above all. It seems quite po sible that Naylor hasnt yet reached his ceiling, given that his early-career development was stunted by both the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and then a nasty fractured ankle that cut short his 2021 season and cost him a bit of time at the start of the 2022 campaign. Naylor also mi sed about a month due to an oblique strain in 2023, and still generated positive numbers despite a very slow start over the seasons first six weeks. Naylors 128 wRC+ actually outpaced s 123 mark for tops among all Guardians regulars, and Joshs younger brother also delivered a 124 wRC+ in the smaller sample size of 230 PA. These were among the few highlights in an overall dismal year at the plate Mikael Granlund Jersey for the rest of Clevelands roster, as the lack of hitting and multiple injuries in the rotation left the Guardians with a mediocre 76-86 record in Terry Franconas final season as manager. As Hoynes noted, moving Naylor would seem counterintuitive for a Guardians team that is seemingly looking to upgrade the lineup. However, as is often the case with the Guards moves, there is a financial element at play. Naylor is to earn $7.2MM in the second of three arbitration years, and he is eligible to hit free agency after the 2025 campaign. While Ramirez is a notable exception, the Guardians generally doesnt try to retain star talent unle s theyre locked up to extensions earlier in their careers, so Naylor could potentially join a long list of notable Cleveland players who were dealt with at least one year remaining of team control. Just this offseason, it is widely expected that the Guardians will deal since the former Cy Young Award winner will be a free agent in the 2024-25 offseason. Cleveland has to the Rockies in a salary dump type of trade, and this winter in particular carries extra financial uncertainty for the small-market Guardians since the Diamond Sports Groups bankruptcy proceedings lose their TV deal. Since their payroll , that leaves the front office with some tricky decisions to make in figuring out how to improve the roster as a whole. With this in mind, Naylor becomes a very interesting po sible trade chip in an offseason market thin on big bats, particularly in free agency. Any number of teams would certainly have interest in a 26-year-old who might not have hit his offensive peak yet, and a new club would have two years to perhaps ink Naylor to an extension. Based on what Cleveland usually seeks out in such trades of established talent, the Guardians could try and obtain an MLB-ready who can help the team in 2024, as well as a longer-term prospect or two. Turning to the clubs in Hoynes report, the highly-ranked farm systems of the Pirates and Cubs could certainly have the a sets to fit what would surely be a big asking price from the Guardians. Acquiring Naylor would instantly fill the Cubs needs at first base, and provide a nice pivot after Chicago mi sed out on . Cubs GM Carter Hawkins is very familiar with Naylor, as Hawkins previously worked in Clevelands front office before heading to Wrigleyville following the 2021 season. As much as Jed Hoyers front office has been hesitant about dealing from its stash of young talent, two years of relatively inexpensive control over Naylor is a tempting proposition, and it would allow the Cubs to then devote extra dollars to free agency. There is some irony in the Pirates looking to land a player from another team looking to cut costs, given Pittsburghs long history of low payrolls. However, the Bucs have a clear need at first base, and acquiring Naylor would also be another major sign that the team is preparing to finally return to contention. That push might even come as early as 2024, given the NL Centrals state of flux. The Mariners are looking for a particular kind of offensive upgrade, as Naylor would fit Seattles prioritization of good contact hitters. The Ms have already parted ways with , , and in their pursuit of more contact, and acquiring Naylor could also give the Mariners cover to trade current first baseman . Jeff Odgers Jersey

Even with the Mets needing six starters , manager Aatu Raty Jersey Carlos Mendoza is declining to move sudden bullpen weapon Jose Butto into the starting rotation. Thursdays nights represented the latest reason why. Butto retired all nine batters he faced including a first-and-second jam inherited from starter Luis Severino in the sixth inning with four strikeouts over three more scorele s innings to maintain a 2-2 tie. Jose Butto pitches during the Mets 3-2, 10-inning win over the Braves on July 25, 2024. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST We won because of him tonight. Hes done a great job, Severino said after the 10-inning walk-off victory. Hes unbelievable. I dont know how you can do that, being a starter and then just go to the pen and be outstanding. Of course, Severino dealt with that early in his career with the Yankees and recalled making that transition into a reliever as the worst thing. That season-altering move hasnt been an i sue for the 26-year-old Butto, who has stranded all six runners hes inherited over seven relief appearances and a signed a bullpen role beginning July 2. Explore More The righty has a 0.68 ERA over 13 / innings in that stretch, with his lone earned run allowed coming in his previous outing Monday against the Marlins. After Severino allowed the tying run on a walk and two singles to start the sixth, Butto struck out Eddie Rosario and Nacho Alvarez Jr. before getting Ramon Laureano to fly out. Butto also recorded the next six outs to get the ball to Edwin Diaz in the ninth. Jose Butto reacts during the Mets win over the Braves on July 25, 2024. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Butto was pretty amazing there, Mendoza said. I think the biggest thing for me is his ability to slow the game down, especially when theres traffic and just having the awarene s of where we are in the game, whos the hitter, not getting behind in counts. He continues to execute pitches. He stays on the attack and is aggre sive in the count, and the situation is not too big for him. Still, Mendoza had announced before the game , one day after Senga makes his anticipated first start of the season. Butto, who filled in capably over seven outings as a starter earlier in the season, will remain for now as a multiple-inning weapon out of the pen. I just feel really good right now. I feel a lot of confidence, Butto said. My mind is ready to go and I just want to win. Win, win, win, thats my mind right now. Jose Butto reacts during the Mets win over the Braves on July 25, 2024. The Cardinals are going to place catcher on the injured list, with manager Oli Marmol relaying the news to reporters, including . The i sue is tendonitis in his left wrist, per . Contreras left yesterdays game with discomfort in that wrist and didnt play in todays contest. Its unclear how significant this wrist i sue is, but it will end his season strictly based on timing since theres just over a week left on the schedule. After spending his entire career with the Cubs, Contreras reached free agency after last season. The Cards had a vacancy behind the plate for the first time in years after the retirement of and eventually moved Contreras acro s the division by signing him to a five-year, $87.5MM deal with a club option for 2028. The results of his first year in St. Louis were mixed, to say the least. He has long been considered a bat-first catcher and that continued this year. He hit 20 home runs and walked in 10.3% of his plate appearances, leading to a batting line of .264/.358 Bournemouth Jersey /.467 and wRC+ of 128. But he was given a grade of -9 Defensive Runs Saved, the worst such mark of his career. Both FanGraphs and Statcast gave him negative grades for his framing, though Statcast did like his and . Concerns about his defense were seemingly the i sue as he was off his position in May, serving exclusively as the designated hitter for a time. The clubs president of baseball operations John Mozeliak described the i sue as a lack of confidence from the pitching staff, but Contreras was put back behind the plate a week later. That ended up being one strange blip in a disappointing season for the Cards, who are currently 67-86 and in last place in the National League Central, guaranteed to finish with a losing record for just the second time in this century. Its hard to know how much of those results are part of the transition from Molina to Contreras, but pitching was clearly a problem area for the club. They have a collective 4.81 earned run average at the moment, which places them 25th in the league in that category. Going forward, its po sible that the Cards could look to trade a catcher this winter, with Contreras still under contract for four more years. They are looking to add in the offseason and could do some of that via free agency, but trading from their position player mix will likely have to be a consideration as well. has always hit well in the minors and that continued to be the case this year, as he slashed .297/.451/.500 in 83 Triple-A games. had a serviceable season as well, hitting .241/.284/.433 in his 64 major league games. His 94 wRC+ indicates he was a bit below average in a vacuum but thats quite good by backup catcher standards. Herrera doesnt have much left to prove in the minors and will be out of options next year anyway, meaning hell need to hang onto an active roster spot. Knizner still has an option year remaining, which could allow the club to hang onto all three, but gauging league interest could be one path to finding the pitching upgrades they seek. Justin Verlander didnt try to hide from the results. The latest lo s, he said Friday, was frankly embarra sing. The Giants have picked up just four wins during Verlanders starts this year, and he wont make an All-Star Game for a third consecutive season after earning appearances in nine of his first 17 years in the majors. Verlander has recorded an out in the seventh inning just once this season, during a May 1 outing against the woeful Rockies. Explore More Guys are able to execute their game plan against me too easily, Verlander told reporters, according to the Standard. I cant quite get fastballs by guys when I should be able to. The Mariners announced that they have selected the contract of catcher , with fellow backstop placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move. There was already a vacancy on their 40-man roster. Seattle was operating with as its backup to for much of the year, but Murphy landed on the injured list in August due to a thumb i sue, which bumped OKeefe into the job. It was earlier today that Murphys injury, initially reported as a displaced tendon, was actually revealed to be a fracture once the swelling subsided. Hes been shut down from baseball activities for the next 10 days and may not be able to return to the team this year. Now with OKeefe leaving the club for a few days, that has bumped Torrens up to Wilt Chamberlain Jersey the big league club. Torrens was signed to a minor league deal in August to provide some extra depth after Murphys injury and OKeefes promotion. Hes been wearing many jerseys this season, having signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in the offseason and cracking that clubs Opening Day roster. But he was designated for a signment about a month into the season and traded to the Orioles for cash. But he got the DFA treatment again le s than a week later, eventually clearing waivers before electing free agency and signing another minors deal with the Nationals. After about six weeks without getting promoted to the big leagues, he opted out of that deal, which allowed him to sign with the Ms. Amid all of those transactions, he hit .250/.318/.300 in 22 big league plate appearances and .244/.295/.442 in 95 trips to the plate in the minors. Hes generally considered to be a bat-first catcher, which he showed with the Mariners in 2021. He hit 15 home runs in 378 plate appearances that year but his 26.2% strikeout rate has ticked up since. It climbed to 30.1% last year and 36.4% this year, leading to his nomadic trip around the league. Hell now get another shot at the big leagues, which may be brief, depending on what happens when OKeefe comes back. The latter has options and could be sent down to the minors in order to preserve depth, though Torrens is out of options. Its also po sible the club keeps three catchers for the stretch run, with expanded rosters giving them a bit more roster flexibility. If Torrens hangs onto his roster spot, he can be retained via arbitration for three more seasons. Chris Webber Jersey

[Im] prepared for the worst, the Yankees GM said before a 6-5 Grapefruit League lo s to the Cardinals. We will see how it plays out. Im always wired to think the worst and hope for the best. Cashman added: Obviously not what you want, but its ultimately part of our journey here in 2025. For the second consecutive spring, the Yankees about the 2023 Cy Young winner, who was diagnosed with elbow nerve inflammation and edema after just one spring start a year ago. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Cole, who experienced discomfort following his second spring start on Thursday against the Twins, underwent tests and imaging on his right elbow Friday to get an initial idea on Mike Muscala Jersey the injury. He is seeking additional opinions. The 34-year-old gave up six runs in 2 / innings while building up his pitch count to 54, and manager Aaron Boone said he is hoping to have an update on Monday. On Saturday, Cole said he was concerned about having to undergo surgery on the same elbow that shut him down last season. Sources suggest Tommy John surgery is on the table as one of multiple po sibilities. Explore More Cashman agreed with the six-time All-Star, saying he should be concerned, but countered that the Yankees and Cole are more prepared to handle this situation after going through it just a year ago. I was with him in Tampa. I think last year, [it was] very emotional [for Cole] because it was a whole new experience, Cashman said. This year now, not as emotional because hes walked this line already. And so, I think he is mentally more prepared to deal with it because hes already dealt with this once before. So, and thats even the worst-case scenario. Just generally, we are all in a better position to handle something if weve had some experience handling it in the past. So, hes already had a lot of conversations. A lot of engagement with the doctors and lived through this last year. So, le s of an emotional shock this year, and now more about all right, what needs to be done here, whats the best route for he and we. Still, looking for po sible roster moves to overcome another injury nightmare, if needed, at this point in March is difficult, Cashman said. Its a hard pill to swallow for the Yankees, especially after they already took a big blow to the rotation when reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil that will sideline him at least until June. Marcus Stroman is expected to fill in for Gil. Brian Cashman is prepared for the worst regarding Gerrit Coles elbow injury. Last year, we had a succe sful rehab with him, Cashman said. You know, he came back and pitched great for us in the second half and obviously dominant in the postseason. So, it certainly felt like smooth sailing was ahead, but again, pitching is very brittle. Thats just general and then in his specific case, obviously had a breakdown last spring somewhere around this time, and now were dealing with another situation, which is obviously now more concerning because its not like the first episode is now the second episode. So, well do what we have to do. Gerrit Cole now awaits more results on his elbow. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Making his season debut on June 19 last season, Cole pitched to a 3.41 ERA acro s 17 starts in the regular season. In five more starts in the postseason, he pitched to a 2.17 ERA but was on the mound as the Yankees imploded in Game 5 of the World Series. Danilo Gallinari Jersey

September 14: GM Dana Brown told the Astros pregame radio show today ( ) that, while Altuve is set to be out of the lineup, hes expected to mi s two days tops due to the foot sorene s he suffered from last night. September 13: The Astros removed veteran star from their win over the Braves in the third inning today due to what the team has termed right foot discomfort. The specifics of Altuves ailment werent immediately clear, but manager Joe Espada told reporters (including ) after the game that Altuves foot began bothering him after he ran the bases in the third inning, leading them to take him out of the game as a precaution. Espada noted that Altuve is still being evaluated, but the update seems fairly encouraging. It goes without saying that losing Altuve for any amount of time would be a substantial blow to the Astros at a crucial point in the season. They have a measly half-game lead over the Mariners pending the outcome of tonights game in Seattle, and the Rangers lurk just two games behind P. J. Tucker Jersey them. While most division leaders have their spot in the postseason locked up at this point, the Astros actually have just an 80.0% chance to make it to October , arent even favored to win the AL West despite the marginal lead theyre clinging to. Altuve will be crucial if the club is going to avoid getting overtaken in the postseason race, much le s make an impact once they get to October. The longtime second baseman has begun playing some outfield this year due to the teams lack of quality depth on the gra s, although hes largely split time between second base and DH in more recent weeks. Altuve has been slumping recently, with a .208/.276/.383 slash line n 38 games since the start of August. Those numbers arent exactly encouraging, but with a 112 wRC+ on the year and no below average performances since 2013 excepting the shortened 2020 season, Altuve is a relatively safe bet to bounce back if healthy. The Astros will now need to weigh whether to have him play through the foot i sue thats currently ailing him, or to try and work in some extra rest for him (or even place him on the IL) despite the hotly-contested pennant race the Astros find themselves in. If Altuve does need some time off, the presence of deadline pickup and longtime utilityman as viable second base options should help to le sen the blow somewhat. occupies the DH slot on most days at this point, leaving the outfield to some combination of Altuve, Dubon, , , , , and on any given day. Meyers is the only true everyday player in that group, though Cole has gotten off to a hot start and could see regular playing time if he can keep the good times rolling. It seems likely that if Altuve is dealing with a nagging foot i sue, the Astros will try to keep his time in the outfield to a minimum. That could mean a larger opportunity for Cole while Sanchez and Smith platoon in right field, leaving Taylor Trammell to spell Cole and see use primarily as a reserve player. Things could get more complicated if the team makes a deep enough run in the postseason that manages to work his way back into the conversation, however. A hamstring injury that seemed as though it might be season-ending sidelined Paredes nearly two months ago, but he decided to forgo surgery in favor of rehabbing in hopes of returning for the postseason. While theres still no timetable for his return, Espada told reporters ( ) that Paredes is taking live at-bats at the clubs Spring Training complex in West Palm Beach and has begun to run the bases. Its not clear what intensity Paredes is currently running at, but Espada said the current plan is for him to simply continue ramping up his at-bats, running, and ground balls at third base in hopes of a return. If Paredes were to return to action at some point this year, that would leave the Astros with a bit of a positional logjam. Paredes is capable of playing third base, first base, and DH. and currently occupy the infield corners, however, meaning that Paredes would most likely have to push Alvarez and his lackluster glove into left field by taking up the DH role. If hes healthy enough to play the field at some point this postseason, its at least plausible that the Astros could try Correa at second base with Altuve in left field to fit Paredes at first and keep Alvarez at DH, but theres plenty of problems with that plan. Correa has no experience at the keystone as a profe sional, for one, and given Altuves own lackluster defense in the outfield its debatable how much of an upgrade he would even be over Alvarez. That could leave Paredes limited to a bench/pinch hitting role in the playoffs if he returns and the Astros dont want to risk using Alvarez in the outfield, though obviously that would be a great problem for Houston to have considering Paredess talent (he made the All-Star game and crushed 19 homers in just 94 games) and the fact that him becoming a factor would likely mean they made a fairly deep postseason run, given his uncertain timeline. Novemeber 8: McFarland is guaranteed a $1.8MM base salary, reports. The deal comes with another $250K in bonuses based on appearances. McFarland would unlock $50K in his 50th game and would receive another $100K apiece at 60 and 70 appearances. November 7: The As are bringing left-handed reliever back ahead of their expected move to West Sacramento next year. The team announced Thursday theyve agreed to terms with the free agent southpaw on a one-year deal for the 2025 season. McFarland is represented by Octagon. McFarland, 35, spent the 2024 season in the As bullpen and was a reliable source of quality innings. He appeared in nearly half the teams games Tyus Jones Jersey (79) and pitched to a 3.81 ERA with a below-average 16.6% strikeout rate but strong walk and ground-ball rates of 7.2% and 57.3%, respectively. McFarland stymied left-handed opponents with a .234/.267/.324 batting line, though righties had an easier time with him, slashing .273/.364/.414 on the season. This will be McFarlands 13th season in the majors, and a suming he sticks on the roster for at least 122 days, hell reach the coveted 10 years of major league service time over the course of the 2025 campaign. The sinker-heavy southpaw carries a lifetime 4.10 ERA in the majors and has never been adept at mi sing bats (13.9% career strikeout rate, and career-high 18.2% mark in 2023). However, hes one of the games premier ground-ball specialists (career 61.7%, and career-high 67.9% back in 2018) and has only thrice logged a worse-than-average walk rate in his lengthy career. Somewhat incredibly, McFarland will become the only player on the As roster who has a guaranteed salary for the upcoming season. The rest of the roster includes four arbitration-eligible players , , and but the rest of the players on the teams 40-man roster have not yet even reached arbitration and thus do not have a salary locked in for next year. The As are widely expected to spend some money this offseason, be it via free agency or by acquiring players on guaranteed deals via the trade market, as theyll need to spend a fair bit of cash in order to retain their status as a revenue-sharing recipient. McFarland returns to a bullpen that lacks any real definition beyond star closer . Righty posted nice numbers but did so as a 30-year-old rookie, making him something of a wild card. Hard-throwing righty notched a 3.44 ERA and fanned 36.4% of his opponents in 34 innings but also walked 13.2% of the hitters he faced. Twenty-seven-year-old Lefty turned in a sub-3.00 ERA in 72 1/3 innings but had sub-par strikeout, walk and ground-ball rates (in addition to a disastrous 7.14 ERA in a comparable sample of innings in 2023). Given the lack of defined roles beyond Miller, its likely the As will have multiple additions on the bullpen front. For now, McFarland looks like a candidate to work in some leverage spots against lefties who wont be lifted for a pinch-hitter by the opposing manager. That said, As skipper typically used McFarland in low- and medium-leverage spots in 2025, so hes not nece sarily someone the team will throw right into full-on setup work. The As could have some troubles drawing free agents to the team as they gear up to host home games in a Triple-A park for the next several seasons (a suming financing on their planned Las Vegas stadium is eventually finalized). But McFarland knows the team and the staff well, and for the well-traveled lefty, this new one-year deal offers him the opportunity to pitch consecutive seasons for the same team for just the second time in a span of seven seasons. Theres obvious appeal in continuity for a pitcher whos also spent time with the D-backs, As, Cardinals and Mets (plus a spring training with the Nationals) since 2019. Its also just the second guaranteed deal hes signed in whats now five times through the free-agent proce s, so jumping early at a big league opportunity is both sensible and makes for a more relaxed offseason than the veteran southpaw is typically accustomed. The Red Soxopened the season with something of a patchwork rotation after the club lost three of its regular starters to the injured list to open the season. While and are both working their way back to the majors on rehab a signments, with Bello in particular scheduled to make his second of what suggests could be three total rehab starts tomorrow, righty appears to be well behind the other two as writes that Crawford has not yet advanced to facing live hitters. That both Bello and Giolito (who Smith notes is slated to start for Triple-A on Tuesday) are scheduled to make their second rehab starts this week is encouraging. The righties have both long been expected to rejoin the rotation at some point this month, and while Giolitos exact timetable is still not yet fully clear the fact that Bello could return to the rotation after just three rehab outings means he could be back on the mound in Boston as soon as April 16 against the Rays in Tampa, a suming he maintains a schedule of regular rest and suffers no additional setbacks. Right-hander and southpaw have been filling in at the back of the clubs rotation behind , , and , but its po sible the club could opt for a six man rotation when the pitching staff is healthier. That would potentially open up a path for either Fitts or Newcomb to continue starting for the Red Sox going forward while Crawford works his way back to the mound. Unfortunately, Cotillo suggests Jerami Grant Jersey thats still a ways away, writing that May or perhaps even June appear to be the most realistic timeline for the rightys return to the majors. Crawford, 29, made all 33 of his starts for the Red Sox last year but pitched through knee i sues last year that compromised his effectivene s in the second half and lingered into Spring Training. While Crawford told Cotillo that surgery is not currently on the table as a fix for his ailment, even the time hes spent resting and treating the i sue has served more to mitigate the pain rather than solve the problem entirely. In other Red Sox news, that club manager has indicated the clubs defensive plans for star prospect are changing. The versatile Campbell has split his time between second base and left field to this point in his brief big league career after playing the outfield, second base, third base, and shortstop in the minors. While no drastic changes to his usage are expected, with Campbell still remaining at the keystone on most days, Cora told reporters (including Cotillo) that the plan going forward is for Campbell to slide into center field on days where is in the lineup at second base. Previously, Campbell had taken over left field with shifting over to center on those days. The change comes as a result of Campbells comfort in center, where more than 80% of his minor league innings on the outfield gra s have occurred, as well as Durans ability to handle the unusual left field situation in Fenway Park, which requires fielders to play balls off of the iconic Green Monster that tend to ricochet at atypical angles. Campbell has so far played just one game in left this year, but the amount of time he spends on the gra s appears likely to be impacted primarily by the performance of Rafaela and Hamilton in the early days of the season and potentially the eventual call-ups of his fellow top prospects. If top infield prospect makes it to the majors first, that would surely increase Campbells time spent in the outfield, while hed likely spend even more of his time on the dirt if Mayer is beaten to the big leagues by top outfield prospect . 4:59pm: The Marlins also dont plan Ike Anigbogu Jersey to trade today, . 4:49pm: The Marlins arent trading right-hander today, Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald. Hell stay put in Miamis rotation down the stretch. An offseason trade or a deal next summer remains a po sibility, of course. Alcantara is being paid $17MM this year and next, and he has a $21MM club option for the 2027 season. Alcantara and Cabrera were two of the more notable arms on the market this summer. Alcantara, in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, hasnt posted anywhere close to his typically excellent results. He was sharp in each of his two outings prior to the deadline, but the right-handers 6.36 ERA in 109 frames and struggles throughout most of the season prevented the Fish from receiving what they deem commensurate value for a former Cy Young winner who has two years of control left on what would be well below-market rates if he were back to form. Theyll hope to get him right down the stretch. Cabrera, 27, is a former top prospect in the midst of a breakout season. Hes to sed 94 innings of 3.35 ERA ball, fanning 24.3% of opponents against an 8.4% walk rate while sitting close to 97 mph with his heater. He dealt with a minor elbow scare earlier this month but avoided a trip to the injured list. Whether that gave interested teams any trepidation remains unclear. Miami understandably had a high asking price on both pitchers. Cabrera is making just $1.95MM this year and is controllable via arbitration for another three years. The Marlins will head into the offseason with both righties penciled into their 2026 rotation, though their future with the organization hinges on when president of baseball operations Peter Bendix and owner Bruce Sherman feel a return to contention in the NL East is viable. If next year is going to be a transition year or a continuation of the franchises rebuilding efforts, they could end up on the block again in the offseason. At the very least, other clubs figure to try to pry both pitchers away. Wenyen Gabriel Jersey

The Pirates have signed right-hander to a minor league deal, according to his at MLB.com and relayed by the player himself on . He has been a signed to Triple-A Indianapolis for now but will presumably receive an invite to big league spring training. Mattson, 29, signed a minor league deal with the Bucs for the 2024 season as well. He was selected to the roster in September and was able to throw Alize Johnson Jersey 5 1/3 innings over three appearances, allowing three earned runs. He also got into four games with the Orioles in 2021, giving him a 5.59 ERA in seven major league games at this point in his career. He was outrighted off the roster at the start of the offseason. Thats obviously not much of a sample size to make conclusions from, but the Bucs just got an up-close look at Mattson in Triple-A for most of the 2024 season. He to sed 60 innings over 29 appearances at that level with a 3.15 ERA. His 12.9% walk rate there was on the high side but his 29.8% strikeout rate was quite strong. Thats generally been the case for him at the upper levels of the minors. He has thrown 138 1/3 minor league innings over the past four years with a 4.10 ERA, 27.9% strikeout rate and 14.5% walk rate. Theres no harm in a minor league deal, so the Bucs will bring him back in a non-roster capacity. If he can take a step forward in terms of control, that would obviously improve his utility. If he earns his way back onto the roster, he is still has two option years and has very little service time, meaning he can potentially be cheaply retained in a depth role for quite some time. T. J.
