The Padres signed to a four-year earlier this week. Previous reporting had Fred Mcgriff Jersey revealed that it was a four-year, $55MM deal, though heavily backloaded. Pivetta will receive a $3MM signing bonus, then make a salary of just $1MM this year, followed by salaries of $19MM, $14MM and $18MM in the next three years. He has the opportunity to opt out after the second and third years of the deal. Yesterday, provided some new details that had not been previously reported. The new details revolve around contingencies for the Padres if Pivetta gets injured. Pivettas $14MM salary in 2027 becomes a club option if at any point through 2026 he has a specified injury or surgery related to the injury and is on the injured list for more than 130 consecutive days in any season or in a one-year period. Blum mentions that Pivetta spent time on the injured list in 2024 due to a right elbow flexor strain, implying that the contract provision relates to a significant elbow surgery. If the Padres turn down the option, Pivetta would head back to free agency in the 2026-27 offseason. At that point, he will have made $23MM over the first two years of the deal. If those injury conditions are not met, then Pivetta will have a $14MM player option and $18MM player option for 2027 and 2028. The Friars can also trigger a 2029 club option for 2029, valued at just $5MM, if Pivetta has the specified injury or surgery related to the specified injury and goes on the injured list for more than 130 consecutive days in any season or in a one-year period, all occurring from July 1, 2026, through the 2028 season. It seems the Padres have built in some cover for themselves if Pivetta needs to mi s significant time, likely due to Tommy John surgery or a similar procedure. A major elbow surgery usually requires a player to mi s 14 months or more, which can be a big sunk cost for a clubs payroll. The Padres have been dealing with notable financial restraints in recent years, so thats perhaps even more so for them. With these contract provisions, they have a few options in the event Pivetta does get hurt. At the end of 2026, they can walk away if Pivetta is slated to mi s a decent chunk of the next year or two. If he sticks around but then suffers a major injury in the latter half of the deal, the 2029 option gives them a chance to add an extra year of control at a bargain rate. Tom Henke Jersey

With a number of vacancies to fill on their coaching staff, the Nationals will fill two of those spots with as the new first base coach and as the new third base coach, Andrew Golden of the Washington Post reports ( ). Parra and Gutierrez will Grant Anderson Jersey respectively take over from and , as the Nats parted ways with both base coaches following the season. This is the first coaching job for the 36-year-old Parra, who has spent the better part of the last two seasons as a special a sistant to Nationals GM Mike Rizzo. 2021 was the final season of Parras 12-year Major League career, and he sandwiched two seasons with the Nats around a stint in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants in 2020. Parra enjoyed a number of highlights during his lengthy career, including two Gold Gloves when playing for the Diamondbacks from 2009-14. However, Parras most famous broadly famous moments came with Washington in 2019, as his use of Baby Shark as his walkup song made him a viral sensation. Parras arrival with the Nationals after a May 2019 trade with the Giants was also considered a chief turning point in the Nats season, as Parras clubhouse leadership and contributions as an outfield regular helped get a then-struggling Washington team on track. The result was the Nationals first World Series championship, cementing Parras position as a fan favorite in the District for life. The 53-year-old Gutierrez also has 12 seasons of Major League playing time on his resume, suiting up for six different teams from 1993-2004. Post-playing career, Gutierrez worked with the Reds player development department for five years and was the manager of their Double-A affiliate in 2021. Gutierrez moved on from that job to join the Nationals prior to the 2022 season, first working as a Latin American scout and in a special a sistants role, and he was part of the MLB teams coaching staff in 2023 as a run prevention coordinator. That somewhat unique title meant that Gutierrez was focusing on improving the Nats defense, and Gutierrez (himself a former shortstop) in particular worked with and in the middle infield. Former major leaguer recently pa sed away, per an from a funeral home in Virginia. He was 90 years old. Roach was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1933. He played baseball at Dylan Carlson Jersey the University of Virginia before signing with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953. He got a brief start to his big league career by getting into three games that year and five more the next. Military service prevented him from appearing in either the 1955 or 1956 seasons, but he was able to resume his baseball trajectory in 1957. He spent most of that year in the minors but was called up and appeared in seven games for Milwaukee. The club won the National League pennant and faced the Yankees in the World Series. Roach didnt appear in any games in the series but Milwaukee was victorious, defeating the Yanks in seven games. He was able to carve out a part-time utility role in the majors after that. In 1958, he hit .309 in 44 games, playing first and second base as well as the outfield corners. Unfortunately, a hard slide from injured Roachs left knee on August 3. He required surgery that kept him out of action for the rest of that season and part of the following year as well. He would continue in that part-time utility role through the 1962 season, eventually spending some time with the Cubs and the Phillies. He finished his career with 227 major league games played, notching 119 hits, including 25 doubles and seven home runs. He scored 42 runs, drove in 43 and retired with a .238 batting average. After his baseball career was over, Roach got a job with the Bank of Virginia Trust division and stayed with that company for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, two children and five grandchildren, among other family members. We at MLB Trade Rumors extend our condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. Pete Fairbanks Jersey

Last week, MLBTR's Steve Adams every team's chances of landing in a post for Front Office subscribers. In the wake of Thomas Saggese Jersey last night's deal, let's continue that exercise by examining where each club stands on the market's top pitcher. With Snell off the board on a deferred $182MM deal, is the only remaining pitcher who might break the $200MM threshold. He just turned 30 and should be in line for seven or potentially eight years. Burnes hasn't been quite as dominant over the past two seasons as he was during the 2020-22 stretch. His strikeouts have trended down in consecutive years, settling at a slightly above-average 23.1% rate this past season. Burnes managed a 2.92 earned run average despite the drop in whiffs. He has an excellent durability record and has reached 32 starts in three straight seasons. Burnes should at least easily beat the seven years and $172MM which secured last winter. We predicted him for an even $200MM over seven seasons when we ranked him the on our Top 50. Which teams are best positioned to make that kind of offer? No credit card required! Celebrate the return of baseball by searching every season, game, hit, strikeout, and dinger in the Baseball Reference database. ! The 2024 season is just days away. Its a time of renewed hope for at least the vast majority of teams. It also opens the opportunity for a few veteran players to continue building on what have already been very accomplished careers, some of which should happen early in the year. Sam Haggerty Jersey Wins Theres no pitcher whos particularly close to a magic round number unle s we drop all the way down to 100, which is notable but not especially illustrious. However, s win total will still be worth tracking. The Houston ace will begin the season on the injured list but is hopeful of a quick return. The three-time Cy Young winner is at 257 wins in his career and will pa s for 41st all-time if he records even four victories this year. Eight wins will push Verlander into the top 40, surpa sing . With nine wins, hell leapfrog . Ten victories will be enough to overtake both and . With a dozen wins, Verlander will move past . Recording 13 wins will eclipse , while 14 will pa s and . Perhaps 17 is a long shot, but if Verlander can get to that point, hell pa s and move into 32nd place all-time. Each of Lyons, Rixey, Feller, Palmer, Mu sina, Grimes and Ruffing is a Hall of Famer a distinction that surely awaits Verlander in the future. As an aside, Verlander would also become just the fifth pitcher to ever record 200-plus strikeouts in 10 seasons of his career. Again, starting out on the injured list doesnt help his chances. He hasnt topped 200 in a season since fanning 300 back in 2019, but theres always a slim chance. Only Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens and Tom Seaver have recorded 10 or more seasons of 200 punchouts. Saves Heading into the 2024 season, the current No. 7 and 8 names on the all-time saves list will have active closers jobs: (Red Sox) and (Orioles). Jansen currently boasts 420 saves. Kimbrel is at 417. Jansen and Kimbrel not only have a chance to finish the season in MLBs top five all-time saves leaders it seems quite likely both will get there with good health. Jansen needs three saves to pa s , five to pa s John Franco and 18 to pa s , whos currently fourth all-time. Kimbrel is only three saves behind him, so he needs just six, eight and 21 to wind up in the top five right behind Jansen. Its also po sible the two will flip spots, given the proximity on the current leaderboards. Way down the list, Braves closer enters the season with 190 career saves. That puts him 58th all-time. He has a strong chance to become the 54th pitcher to ever reach 200 saves in a career. Iglesias saved 33 games for the Braves in 2023, and if he repeats that hell jump to 45th all-time. Hell pitch this season at 34, and if he can remain a serviceable closer into his mid- and late-30s, he has a decent chance at pa sing and Bruce Sutter both at exactly 300 saves and becoming just the 32nd pitcher to ever reach that milestone, though clearly thatll take another few years. Other po sibilities to reach 200 saves this season include , who currently sits at 175 saves in his career, and , whos sitting on 165. might get first crack at the ninth inning over Robertson, but hes been inconsistent and had his share of injuries. Hader is the clear favorite for saves in Houston, but hes only reached 35 saves in a single season twice before. Both pitchers could get to that nice round number given their presence as late-inning options on contending clubs. Taking a slightly different approach to career save totals, Kimbrel is already one of just four players in MLB history to have five or more seasons of 40-plus saves, joining Mariano Rivera (9), Trevor Hoffman (9) and the previously mentioned K-Rod (6). He hasnt had a 40-save season since 2018, but if he can turn back the clock hed tie Rodriguez with his sixth 40-save season. Similarly, Jansen is one of just ten pitchers to ever have four seasons of 40 or more saves. He reached that mark as recently as 2022. A 40-save season would tie him with Kimbrel at five and make him just the fifth pitcher to ever enjoy five such seasons. Strikeouts likely wont pitch in the seasons first half, but if he takes the ball at all this year hell be a virtual lock to move into tenth place on the all-time strikeout list, surpa sing Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. Mad Maxs 3367 punchouts are just four behind the Profe sor. With a full season, Scherzer mightve had a shot at s ninth-place mark (3509), but thatll likely have to wait for future seasons a suming Scherzer keeps going after the 24 campaign. The aforementioned Verlander is only 25 strikeouts behind Scherzer and thus all but certain to pa s his former teammate. Verlander is currently tied with Phil Niekro at 3442, meaning his next strikeout will give him sole po se sion of 11th place all-time. And if he can return early enough in the 2024 season, Verlander will have a shot at the 168 strikeouts he needs to inch past Johnson on the all-time list. Hed need 193 to pa s Gaylord Perry for eighth all-time, which probably wont happen this year, but Verlander has said he wants to pitch into his mid-40s and has an option on his contract for the 2025 season. We dont know when will pitch this year or whether the still-unsigned will pitch at all, but both are within arms reach of 3000 punchouts in their respective careers. Only 19 pitchers have ever done so. Kershaw needs 56 whiffs to get to that point and is hopeful of rejoining the Dodgers rotation in the second half after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. His deal comes with a 2025 option, so even if 3000 doesnt happen this year, theres a good chance well see it in 25. Greinke is just 21 strikeouts away from 3000. A return to the Royals seems unlikely, but if he decides he wants to pitch and chase down that 3000 milestone, hed surely garner some interest from teams seeking depth. There are a handful of names chasing down the 2000-strikeout mark as well. As of this writing, 87 pitchers have reached that threshold in MLB history. , who currently has 1932 strikeouts, needs just 68 more to get there. Darvish, (1906 strikeouts) and (1880) are all practically locks to get to 2000 with full, healthy seasons. Total Appearances Jansen already ranks 50th all-time with 817 games pitched, but he can jump into the top-40 if he makes it into 32 games this season. Hes already one of only 54 pitchers to ever reach 800 appearances in his career. Three more names will likely join that 800 club two of whom Ive already mentioned: Robertson (793 games) and Kimbrel (780). The third is veteran righty , whos reportedly likely to make the White Sox roster. At 791 appearances, he already ranks 59th all-time. With just nine games this season, the rubber-armed Shaw can further his workhorse reputation and perhaps move into the top-50 all time. Ken Giles Jersey

DALLAS More and more, it is appearing as if the Astros are and the Yankees are among the teams most seriously pursuing the star outfielder, The Post has learned. The Yankees, though, might not be the most determined pursuer of Tucker as the Winter Meetings neared an end. The Cubs are seen as a strong player for the lefty hitter and the Giants are also involved in talks with the Astros. The Yankees are pursuing a Kyle Tucker trade with the Astros. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con The Phillies also had been among the teams that at least inquired and tried to formulate a package that would work, but found a deal difficult to make. Tucker, 28 next month, is eligible for free agency after the upcoming season. is seen as likely to push Tuckers next payday up $300 million or perhaps even $400 million. Explore More Houston owner Jim Crane has never shown the stomach for such contract sizes, which is why Tucker became such a hot topic at these meetings. Houston actually got a preview of life without Tucker last year. He mi sed three months with a shin contusion and the Astros neverthele s went an AL-best 48-31 from June 4-Sept. 5, though Tucker had been their best player before the injury. The Astros are prioritizing major league-ready corner infielders and starting pitching if they move Tucker. In first baseman Matt Shaw (the Cubs top prospect, according to MLB.com), third baseman Cam Smith and 2024 All-Star Isaac Paredes, Chicago has pieces that are attractive to Houston, which is bracing to potentially lose third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency. Outfielder Seiya Suzuki, who is owed $36 million for 2025-26, also is a player that had been discu sed in a potential deal. What makes the Yankees fascinating is that gives them seven potential starters for next season. The thought is that would motivate them to trade Marcus Stroman to get out of as much of his $18 million owed next year as po sible and/or Nestor Cortes, who will be entering his walk year. And that might happen. Because the top of the Yankee farm system is in a down cycle, they would have to get creative to acquire someone as talented as Tucker, and Houston is said to be very interested in AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil. It is po sible that Gil and Ben Rice could front a package that at least gets the Yankees to Thomas Szapucki Jersey the table. Tucker would represent about as good a lefty-hitting outfield response to losing Soto as the Yankees can make. And if they land him, the Yankees would be trading for a star in that category entering his walk year for the second straight season, after obtaining Soto from the Padres at last years Winter Meetings. Think of Gil or perhaps Clarke Schmidt, to some degree, like Michael King last year as the key piece sent to San Diego to obtain Soto. But like with Soto, the Yankees would have to risk that Tucker would be a one-and-done proposition. Tucker, the fifth overall pick by the Astros in 2015, has not played anywhere but Houston and, thus, almost certainly would not grant permi sion to work out a long-term contract as part of a trade because he would want to see how he likes any new locale. Also, the interest in Tucker indicates a direction the Yankees are taking to try to compensate for the exit of Soto. Kyle Tucker Getty Images He is prime-aged, left-handed and a superb all-around player, or very similar to the Cubs Cody Bellinger, another player of interest to the Yankees. The Yanks have talked to Christian Walker, but as the meetings concluded their interest seemed to have dimmed somewhat. Walker is a Gold Glove first baseman, but he is righty and turns 34 in March. In addition, the Yankees already have signed Fried, who rejected a qualifying offer, meaning they will lose their second- and fifth-highest picks in July. Walker also rejected a qualifying offer. Thus, if the Yanks sign him, theyd lose four of their top six picks at a time theyd be looking to restock a farm system depleted by recent trades. A trade for Tucker would cost more young, controllable players. But, as a reflection of his all-around excellence, Tucker played just 78 games last year, yet finished 27th in the majors in WAR at 4.2 (FanGraphs). He was fifth behind Aaron Judge, Soto, Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. the ultimate top four in the AL MVP voting when he fouled a ball off his right shin and went down for those three months. Tucker won a Gold Glove in 2022 and finished fifth for AL MVP in 2023, when he hit 29 homers, stole 30 bases and led the AL with 112 RBIs, He had a career-best 181 OPS-plus in 339 plate appearances last season. The stove has finally heated up in Atlanta. After a relatively Garry Templeton Jersey quiet start to the offseason, the Braves agreed to a three-year, $42 million deal with outfielder Jurickson Profar. He will make $12 million in 2025 and $15 million in each of the following two seasons. Jurickson Profar is heading to the Braves in free agency. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Explore More Profar, one of baseballs top prospects when he was called up to the majors with the Rangers in 2012, had fits and starts throughout his big league career but came into his own in 2024 with the Padres. He collected career-bests in home runs (24) OPS (.839) and RBIs (85) in what was his first season as an All-Star. His 4.3 WAR, , also represented the high watermark of his career. Profar was an All-Star with the Padres last season. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Profar, 31, has had the ability to play both the infield and outfield, but last year he played the entirety of the year in left, save for two games at first base. If he does indeed slot into left field, hell be joining an outfield with Michael Harris in center and 2023 National League MVP Ronald Acuna Jr., once he is good to return from the ACL tear he suffered last May. CLEVELAND The Yankees may finally get something out of Mark Leiter Jr. in October. The right-hander, acquired from the Cubs prior to the trade deadline in July, pitched poorly enough since the trade that he was excluded from the rosters for the ALDS against the Royals and the ALCS versus Cleveland. But he was added Friday to replace the injured Ian Hamilton, who . Yankees pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. (38) reacts after giving up a two-run homer to Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Because Hamilton was removed from the ALCS roster, he wont be able to pitch in the World Series. General manager Brian Cashman Bill Robinson Jersey said the Yankees hoped Leiter and his split-fingered fastball would be an effective pitch against Clevelands lefty-heavy lineup, making Leiter the choice over other candidates such as the inexperienced Cody Poteet and Clayton Beeter. Explore More Hes had a hell of a year, just not as good when he got here for us, Cashman said. But hes certainly capable. Hes got a pretty good weapon against left-handed hitters. I hope it benefits us. Hopefully when called upon, hell give us quality outs. Cashman added that while Nestor Cortes out with a strained elbow would have been willing to return for this series, he was not a consideration. Yankees pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. (38) throws a pitch during the 7th inning against the Boston Red Sox. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Nestor would want to be [on the roster], but we would be skipping too many return-to-play protocols to safely deploy him, Cashman said of the lefty. That doesnt mean he might not be available for the next round if [we] get there. He has a few more hurdles to climb to get him into a safe zone. Its his career were talking about, so we want to make sure hes right. As for Leiter, he was brought in to help steady a bullpen that needed a boost, with Clay Holmes struggling at the time. Follow The Posts coverage of the Yankees in the postseason: Leiter, who declined comment Thursday when asked how he was staying ready during his layoff, has . Leiter, acquired for a pair of prospects, entered Friday having not pitched since the end of the regular season. But his last four appearances in September were better than the bulk of his other outings with the Yankees. He debuted back in 2008, has almost 3,000 innings in the majors with a 3.16 earned run average, three Cy Young trophies, eight All-Star selections and two World Series rings. The question is what he has left in the tank at this point. He is now 40 years old and coming off an injury-marred season. He started 2024 on the injured list while recovering from offseason back surgery. Though he recovered from that, he also battled a nerve i sue in his hand, shoulder fatigue and a strained hamstring throughout the season. He was limited to just nine starts and 43 1/3 innings. That obviously creates some concern but Scherzer has been remarkably durable throughout his career. In each full season from 2009 to 2023, he made 27 or more starts and logged at least 145 1/3 innings. From 2013 to 2018, he had six straight seasons of hitting the 200-inning plateau. In short, 2024 was the first season of his career where he mi sed significant time. Even though the volume of his output was low, some of the results last year were still decent. He posted a 3.95 earned run average over those nine starts. His 22.6% strikeout rate was a drop for him personally but still around league average, while his 5.6% walk rate was still a very strong mark. His velocity was down as well on his fastball, going from 93.7 miles per Roy White Jersey hour in 2023 to 92.5 mph last year. There are obviously some yellow flags in there but its of course po sible that better health could lead to some better results. Its a bit of a gamble for the Jays but this is clearly the market rate for a veteran pitcher with some question marks. Each of , and secured one-year deals worth $15MM this offseason. Scherzer symbolically got past that group with an extra half mil. There are many ways in which Verlander and Scherzer are similar, given their lengthy careers full of accolades. The two have also cro sed paths many times, as they were both in the Detroit rotation just over a decade ago, before reuniting with the Mets more recently. Verlanders 2024 was also injury-marred, though with perhaps some more concerning numbers. His 17 starts and 90 1/3 innings were more than Scherzer managed but Verlander had a 5.48 ERA and his strikeout rate dropped all the way to 18.7%. Verlander is also a bit older, about to turn 42 next month. Cobb is only 37 but he only managed three starts last year, plus two more in the playoffs, thanks to his own maladies. He also doesnt quite have the same legendary track record as Scherzer or Verlander. Morton, who is now 41, managed to make 30 starts for Atlanta last year but he seemingly limited his market by having a preference for clubs with spring training sites near his family in Florida. The Jays have been connected to just about every available free agent this winter. That has included some high-profile position players like , and , as well as starting pitchers like , and . There were obviously some frustrating mi ses in there, but the club has had a couple of strikes more recently. In the past three weeks, theyve added to their lineup, to their bullpen and now Scherzer to the rotation. While the Jays may have preferred to get one of those other starting pitchers, Scherzer keeps their commitment short. It also gives the club a very veteran rotation core. is 34, will turn 36 next month and will be 31 in May. Those four are sure to be taking the ball with regularity, as long as theyre all healthy. If Scherzer avoids the injury bug this year, hell upgrade the rotation and could perhaps indirectly upgrade the bullpen as well. Prior to this signing, and were projected as the top options for the fourth and final spots in the rotation. Even with Scherzer in the fold, Francis will likely still get a rotation spot. After the Jays traded at the deadline last year, Francis got a rotation audition and ran with it. He finished out the campaign with 59 innings over nine starts with a 1.53 ERA, 26.5% strikeout rate and 3.3% walk rate. He still has one minor league option but the Jays would surely like to see if he could carry that forward. That could push Rodrguez into a relief role, something he has done with succe s before. Last year was his first in the majors and he made 21 starts with decent results. He had a 4.47 ERA, 23.1% strikeout rate and 10.9% walk rate. But prior to signing with the Jays, he was a dominant closer in Japan. In 2022, he made 56 appearances for the Chunichi Dragons with a 1.15 ERA, 27.5% strikeout rate and 8.3% walk rate. He sat out 2023 while attempting to be declared a free agent. Going into last year, reported that Rodrguezs contract stipulated he could only be optioned for the 2024 season. The Blue Jays did indeed option him a few times last year but it seems they wont be able to do so from now on, so perhaps hell end up in the bullpen instead. He could compete for a leverage role alongside Hoffman, , and . That would subtract from the rotation depth a bit, but the Jays have a few more options there than they did last year. They added , who already has a bit of Triple-A and MLB experience, in the aforementioned Kikuchi deal. is on the 40-man roster and should be in Triple-A this year after spending most of 2024 in Double-A. had internal brace surgery in June and could make a late-season return. Since Scherzer is one a one-year deal and Ba sitt is going into the final year of his pact, there are long-term openings for that group if any of them have a good showing in 2025. now sets the clubs payroll at $250MM and and their competitive balance tax number at $273MM. That puts them already well beyond last years Opening Day payroll, which put at $225MM. Their CBT number was over the line in 2024 but they ducked under when their disappointing season lead to a deadline selloff, so they will go into 2025 as first-time payors. They are now within striking distance of the third CBT line, which will be $281MM next year. Going over that marker this year would mean their top pick in the 2026 draft would be pushed back 10 spots. Despite running those numbers up to new heights, it doesnt appear they are done. Per , the Jays are still interested in if he doesnt circle back to the Mets while also suggests they should still have some flexibility. Maybe the Jays will add Alonso or someone else, or finally get an extension done with Its been a long, frustrating winter for Jays fans but a lot has changed in the past few weeks, perhaps with more to come. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training in about two weeks. first reported that Scherzer was headed to the Jays. first reported that it was a one-year deal. then reported the $15.5MM guarantee. first had the lack of deferrals. had the no-trade clause. March 6 : The Mets announced that Reid-Foley has been outrighted to Triple-A, indicating he cleared waivers. He is no longer on the 40-man roster. March 4 : The Mets have placed right-hander on outright waivers, reports . At this point, theres nothing to suggest that the righty has been designated for a signment, so he seems to still be on the 40-man roster. If he goes unclaimed, the Mets could choose to outright him off the roster and open a spot. However, the waivers are not revocable, so hell join another club if he is claimed. Clubs are allowed to place players on waivers without immediately removing them from the 40-man roster. Its fairly rare that this actually happens, though the Rockies did it with . In that instance, the Rockies lost Lawrence when the Pirates . Reid-Foley, 29, has appeared in each of the past seven major league seasons. However, health has prevented him from taking on any kind of meaningful workload of late. He has never been able to throw 34 innings in a big league season. He twice got over 30 frames but hasnt done so since 2019. From 2018 to 2020, he served as an up-and-down depth arm for the Blue Jays. He got over 30 innings in the first two of those seasons but spent most of the shortened campaign on optional a signment. In total, he logged 71 2/3 innings with a 4.40 earned run average. He was flipped to the Mets as part of the that sent to Toronto. Reid-Foley logged 20 2/3 innings for the Mets that year with a 5.23 ERA but his 28.3% strikeout rate and 9.3% walk rate made for an intriguing combo Kodai Senga Jersey . Unfortunately, some elbow inflammation sent him to the injured list that year. He avoided the surgeons table for a while but eventually required Tommy John in May of 2022. He was non-tendered after that season but re-signed with the Mets via a minor league deal going into 2023. He was selected back to the roster late that year and kept his roster spot into 2024. Last year, he was placed on the injured list multiple times due to right shoulder impingements. Around those IL stints, he to sed 21 2/3 innings with a 1.66 ERA and 27.8% strikeout rate but a very high walk rate of 15.6%. He got a bit of help from a .255 batting average on balls in play and 63% strand rate. His 2.80 FIP and 3.98 SIERA were still good numbers but point to that ERA being unsustainable. Control i sues arent new for Reid-Foley, who now has a 14.2% walk rate in his career. Perhaps thats due to the stop-and-start nature of his career, working around those injuries, but its been an ongoing theme neverthele s. The Mets tendered Reid-Foley an arbitration contract this winter, agreeing to a salary of $800K. The righty has at least three years of service time, meaning he would have the right to elect free agency if he clears waivers and is outrighted. However, since he has le s than five years of service, he would have to forfeit that salary in doing so. Perhaps the Mets are hoping Reid-Foley will clear waivers and accept his a signment in order to keep that salary in place, which would allow them to open a roster spot and keep some depth in a non-roster capacity. But by putting him on waivers, they are risking losing him to another club. The health and the walks are a concern but some teams might be interested in his 28.8% strikeout rate since joining the Mets. Reid-Foley is out of options, but he can theoretically be controlled via arbitration through 2027. Matt Gage Jersey

The Orioles announced today that right-hander has undergone surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum in his right shoulder. He is expected to mi s the next 12 months. was among those to relay the news. The news is obviously brutal for the Os and Bautista. Scott Blewett Jersey He just mi sed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He got back on the mound this year and showed some flashes of his old self. However, hes now going to mi s the remainder of the 2025 season and a huge chunk of 2026 as well. Given the estimated timeline, any kind of setback could lead to him mi sing another entire season. Prior to the injury setbacks, he had established himself as one of the most dominant relievers in the game. Over the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, he gave the Os 126 2/3 innings with a tiny 1.85 earned run average. His 10% walk rate was a bit on the high side and his 39.9% ground ball rate wasnt special but he punched out a ma sive 40.4% of batters faced. As mentioned, he showed some hints of that form in 2025, though also with some rust. He logged 34 2/3 innings this year with a 2.60 ERA. His 35.2% strikeout rate was technically a drop-off but still a great figure. Meanwhile, his grounder rate jumped to 50.7%. On the worrying side, his walk rate spiked to 16.2%. Perhaps he would have continued refining things as he got more innings and shook off the rust, but that wont happen now. He landed on the 15-day IL in July due to shoulder discomfort. It was announced by the team in August that his injury was significant and that he wouldnt be coming back this year. Todays news provides more clarity on how dire the situation is. Its po sible that Bautista eventually throws le s than 40 innings for the 2024-26 stretch. If he returns late next year, he could push a bit beyond that number, but likely not by much. Bautista is controllable through 2027. He is making just $1MM this year. He will be due a raise in arbitration for 2026 and 2027 but the mi sed time cuts into his ability to substantially increase his salary. Given his ceiling, the Os will surely tender him a contract with the hope of him contributing late in 2026 and/or for the entire 2027 campaign. For the Os, its the latest kick to the nuts in a season that has seen them pummeled by injuries. They came into the year knowing that and would be rehabbing from last years surgeries, but then they have also seen guys like , , , and others mi s significant time. On the position player side, , , , and others mi sed chunks of time. Those injuries helped push the Os down in the standings. Though they came into the year with clear postseason aspirations, they wound up deadline sellers. , Kittredge, , , , , , and were all flipped prior to the deadline. The club is now playing out the string on the 2025 season, so the Bautista injury is fairly moot for the short term. But his extended timeline obviously hurts for 2026. As mentioned, the Os already flipped four relievers last month, putting a big dent in the bullpen. Bautista is an even bigger lo s. Though they sold at the deadline, its a sumed that the club intends to rebound and compete again in 2026, as they have a young and exciting core to build around. Presumably, the Orioles already planned on making a few bullpen moves in the coming offseason. This news should only enhance the need. For Bautista personally, its another delay in him unlocking a notable paycheck. The late bloomer didnt crack the big leagues until he was in his age-27 season. Despite his excellent results, hes now 30 and hasnt made more than $1MM in a season, which is barely above the league minimum. The two lengthy surgery absences will dampen his earning power in arbitration. Hes not slated to reach free agency until after his age-32 campaign. Its po sible hes healthy by that point but the injury track record will be still be noted by clubs. Photo courtesy of Jonathan Dyer, Imagn Images Tom Brunansky Jersey

The Brewers announced that right-hander Bill Buckner Jersey has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville. fellow righty has been designated for a signment as the corresponding move. The clubs 40-man roster count drops to 39. Paredes, 28, signed a minor league deal with the Brewers in the offseason. He started the year with 18 strong Triple-A appearances, allowing 1.31 earned runs per nine innings. His 11% walk rate in that time was high but he struck out a huge 41.5% of batters faced and also got grounders on 56.8% of balls in play, earning himself a call-up to the big leagues. Since then, the surface level results have been good, though with le s impre sive stuff under the hood. He spent about two months on the injured list from early July to the middle of September but has to sed 20 2/3 big league innings around that. The 1.74 ERA looks impre sive but his 16.7% strikeout rate and 11.9% walk rate are both subpar, while his 44.8% ground ball rate is right around league average. Hes been helped by a .224 batting average on balls in play and 84% strand rate, which is why his 3.56 FIP and 4.95 SIERA are both far higher than his ERA. It seems the Brewers didnt expect him to maintain his run prevention and bumped him off the roster. Hes out of options, so they had to cut him from the 40-man entirely. He wont have much short-term appeal on the waiver wire since he wont be postseason eligible with any acquiring club. Paredes can be retained for four seasons beyond this one. Perhaps some club will be intrigued by his dominant form in the minors earlier this year and put in a claim with long-term goals. However, his major league results this year line up with his longer track record. He pitched for the Astros from 2020 to 2022, logging 32 1/3 innings with a 3.90 ERA, 23.6% strikeout rate, 19.7% walk rate and 44.7% ground ball rate. If he were to go unclaimed, he could elect free agency by virtue of having a previous career outright. Tony Gonsolin Jersey

7:53 pm: While the Rays are not prepared to say that Walls will be ready for Opening Day, his manager is optimistic he could be back for the start of the 2024 season, per . If hes running before he comes into spring training, that would be a very good sign, said Kevin Cash. Still, the skipper cautioned that its too soon to know for sure: I think well know more in a month. 2:51 pm: The Rays announced this afternoon (as relayed by ) that shortstop underwent a surgical procedure on his right hip today. The procedure aimed to relieve discomfort due to an impingement and repair a tear in the labrum of the hip. Per the Rays, Walls is expected to be ready for baseball activities in February, though his readine s for Opening Day wont be clear until he returns to baseball activities and a timeline can be established. Its an incredibly unfortunate development for the Rays. Walls, 27, down the stretch in 2023 following the placement of star shortstop on administrative leave while the league investigated allegations against Franco of inappropriate relationships with multiple minors. While Walls hit well early in the season, slashing .244/.349/.481 in his first 152 trips to the plate, he struggled the rest of the way, slashing just .169/.270/. Jose Rojas Jersey 221 with a 27.9% strikeout rate over his final 197 plate appearances. Despite that downturn in offensive production, Walls still looked to be in line for the lions share of time at shortstop entering next year, pending a decision on Francos situation. Walls, a finalist of the utility Gold Glove award in the AL, saw his glove work around the infield praised by Defensive Runs Saved (+10 DRS) but panned by Outs Above Average (-6). The Rays have a few other options at shortstop in the event that the everyday job remains vacant headed into Opening Day. Youngsters , , and are all already on the 40-man roster, though none of the group have found succe s in the major leagues to this point in their careers. Camineros .235/.278/.353 slash line in a brief 36-PA cup of coffee was the best major-league performance among that trio by measure of wRC+. Given that reality, the club may be best served looking for an external shortstop option to provide depth at the position via free agency. Such an addition may be easier said than done, however. After all, the Rays are already due to stretch the clubs budget in 2024, with projecting the club for a $120MM payroll that exceeds their 2023 figure by more than $50MM. The club may have already been poised to shed salary by moving on from the likes of , , and perhaps even , but such a move seems all the more likely if the Rays are forced to commit additional resources to shortstop in 2024. Quality shortstop options are few and far between in free agency this offseason, with the likes of , , and representing some of the best options available. Ryan Noda Jersey

Veteran right-hander rejected an outright a signment from the Padres following his recent DFA and instead elected free agency, . He can now sign with any club. Edwards returned to the Padres on a minor league deal earlier this summer his second career stint with the organization. The 32-year-old (33 next month) made only one appearance with San Diego Ryan Gusto Jersey this time around, however, and allowed all three runners he faced to reach base (two walks, one hit). He wound up being lifted from the game and bailed out when teammate induced a grounder to escape the bases-loaded jam created by Edwards. Though his lone MLB look wasnt sharp, Edwards has had a decent year in Triple-A. Hes split the season between the top affiliates for the Cubs and Padres, pitching to a 3.30 ERA with a 22.2% strikeout rate but a grisly 14.3% walk rate. Hes worked both out of the bullpen and, more recently, out of the Padres Triple-A rotation, so hes stretched out for multiple innings. Prior to this season, the well-traveled Edwards spent the 2022-23 seasons with the Nationals and pitched well out of manager Davey Martinezs bullpen. In 93 2/3 innings, he tallied a 3.07 ERA albeit with shaky rate stats (20% strikeout rate, 10.6% walk rate). A stre s fracture in Edwards right shoulder ended his 2023 campaign prematurely and limited him to a minor league deal this past offseason. That deal came with the Cubs, but Edwards triggered a June opt-out in that contract after he hadnt been added to the big league roster and signed a minor league deal with the Padres. Once a top prospect in the Rangers system who went from Texas to the Cubs as part of a prospect package for starter , Edwards has now pitched in parts of 10 big league seasons. Hes logged a total of 280 innings spread acro s six clubs, with the bulk of his work coming for the Cubs and Nats. Edwards carries a 3.54 ERA with a hearty 28.1% strikeout rate and bloated 12.7% walk rate in the majors. Derek Bell Jersey

2:53 PM: The Blue Jays have made it official and selected Estradas contract from Triple-A Buffalo. To free up room on the 26 and 40-man rosters, the team optioned left-hander to Triple-A and transferred outfielder/DH from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL. Santander will now not be eligible to return until late July. 7:10 AM: The Blue Jays are set to select the contract of right-hander today, according to a report from . Torontos 40-man roster is full, so a corresponding move Christin Stewart Jersey will be nece sary to make room for Estrada on both the active and 40-man rosters. Should Estrada make an appearance while on the roster, it would be his big league debut. Estrada, 26, was born in La Habana, Cuba and made his pro debut with the Blue Jays back in 2018. After losing a season of development to 2020s cancelled minor league season, Estrada managed just 39 1/3 innings of work total between 2021 and 22 due to injuries. That slowed his ascent up the minor league ladder considerably, and he only cracked the Double-A level just last year. Despite that slow-going path to the majors, however, Estrada posted a 3.29 ERA acro s three levels of the minors last year and has followed that up by more or le s holding his own at the Triple-A level this year. He has a 4.75 ERA through 15 starts, but his 24.8% strikeout rate is quite strong for a starter while his 7.8% walk rate is roughly average. Its not entirely clear what role Estrada will play now that hes headed to the majors. The Blue Jays have a full rotation for the first time in a while, with back from the injured list and southpaw having more than earned a spot in the starting five after posting a 2.60 ERA on the season, including a 3.32 ERA in four starts since moving to the rotation last month. That duo is joined by , , and . While each of those three is having somewhat middling seasons overall, none of them should be expected to move out of the rotation barring a trip to the injured list. That makes the most likely outcome for Estrada a move to the bullpen. The right-hander could serve as a solid complement to Lauer, who for all his effectivene s has capped out around 85 pitches this year. That could make having a multi-inning righty able to piggyback off of Lauer an attractive option, and Estrada would also be able to more generally provide length to a bullpen that has been leaned on heavily in recent days.
